Winton man injured in motorcycle crash

ATWATER -- A 26-year-old Winton man was hospitalized with major injuries Thursday after his motorcycle crashed into a city of Atwater animal control truck, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash was reported around 3:20 p.m. after the truck, driven by 20-year-old Gabrielle Pulido, had come to a stop on Shaffer Road in the northbound left lane, according to Officer John Patterson, CHP spokesman.

Pulido was attempting to make a left turn onto Center Street. Meanwhile, Albert Gonzales was traveling on a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the same lane behind Pulido at about 40 mph. For unknown reasons, Gonzales failed to stop and collided with the back of the truck, Patterson said.

Gonzales tried turning right, but was unable to avoid the crash. He was ejected into the right lane and struck the east curb of the road.

Patterson said the victim was wearing a helmet. Pulido wasn't hurt.

Gonzales was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. His condition is unknown.

The CHP took over the investigation of the crash at the request of Atwater officials, because a city vehicle was involved.
