- vpatton@mercedsun-star.com

A 14-year-old is in the hospital after being stabbed during a fight in the 7000 block of Walnut Avenue in Winton, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.

Investigators believe the incident is gang-related.

Deputies responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a fight. Investigators say the male victim was with a group of friends when several people approached. Words were exchanged between the two groups, leading to a physical confrontation. During the fight, the victim was stabbed by several of the suspects in the upper body, arms and head, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.

Deputies found the victim bleeding, and he was flown to a Modesto hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

It's unknown how many suspects were involved, although witnesses said it was between five and six people.

Deputies are asking anyone with information about the stabbing to call (209) 385-7472, Calls are kept confidential, and you can remain anonymous.
