Around Town: Back to school night

ATWATER -- Atwater High School will host its Back To School Night at 5:45 tonight in the gymnasium, followed by classroom visits.

The Merced Eve. Aglow Community Lighthouse will hold its monthly meeting Friday with a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. at the Sierra Presbyterian Church, 3603 M St.

Mini-grants offered

First 5 Merced County is pleased to announce that its 2010-2011 general mini-grants program guidelines and applications are now available and will be accepted during two cycles this year for mini-grants (up to $3,000) for activities benefitting children from birth through 5 years.

Cycle 1 deadline is Sept. 15, and Cycle 2 deadline is Jan. 14, 2011. The program guidelines and application are available at www.first5- mercedcounty.org, call (209) 385-7337.

The Merced High School class of 1950 will be having its 60th reunion on Sept. 18 at the Branding Iron Restaurant.

Airport fly-in

The 11th annual Mariposa-Yosemite Airport Fly-in and Open House will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 25.

Admission is free and there will be vintage, home-built and antique airplanes to look at and something for everyone to do. Lunch will be available for a small fee.

Run with angels

The memorial 5K run/walk, Running With Angels will be on Oct. 10 at Davenport Park.

Events will start at 8:30 a.m. and all proceeds will benefit the children of Darren Landis Parker and Brandy Teran Saxton. Entry fee is $20 and there will be a dessert auction. Hats are also available for $10 each.

Golf tournament

The Atwater Police Activities League and Atwater Caring About Kids Community Council will host its second annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Rancho Del Rey Golf Course.

Player entry fee is $75 and includes green fee, cart, tee bag and barbecue lunch.

Flag pin sponsorhip is $200 and advertises your company's support of the event. All proceeds to benefit youth programs.

The Merced College Art Gallery will host an exhibition from Sept. 27 through Oct. 21.

The Outreach for Central California Legal Services is a service for senior citizens who need legal advice.

This service is free to all seniors regardless of income and it offers help with items such as wills, scams, elder abuse, elder law, housing rights and government benefits (SSI, Social Security, etc.).
