Officer injured after running into truck

An on-duty Merced police officer received minor injuries Saturday after crashing his patrol car into a parked big rig, the CHP reported.

No one else was hurt.

The officer, William Avery, 26, was traveling about 25 mph southbound on Motel Drive, searching for an armed suspect in the 800 block, near Yosemite Park Way.

The crash happened after Avery turned his head to look at the license plate of a passing car traveling northbound on Motel Drive. He made an unsafe turning movement and rear-ended the trailer of the big rig, according to CHP Officer Ed Macias.

Avery was taken to a hospital, treated for his injuries and released. He remains on light duty, pending one more medical exam, according to Sgt. Jay Struble.

The patrol car, a Ford Crown Victoria, was totaled. Damage to the trailer, a busted mud flap, was minor.

CHP is leading the investigation into the crash.
