A call to prayer

Local Muslims participated in Eid-ul-Fitr services around Merced on Friday morning and into the afternoon. Eid-ul-Fitr, also known as Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the monthlong Muslim holiday of fasting and prayer.

The fast is broken on Eid as Muslims gather together early in the morning, first for a prayer and sermon, followed by a communal breaking of the fast. The remainder of the day is typically spent visiting with family and friends, exchanging cards and gifts for the children.

An Eid service organized by the Merced Family Community Circle and the UC Merced Muslim Student Association at Lake Yosemite on Friday saw about 60 worshippers for their service while the Islamic Center of Merced saw close to 300.
