'Off the 99' podcast: Life in Loughborough

December 10, 2010

Residents of the Meadows-Loughborough neighborhood in North Merced remember a time when their neighborhood was safe. Some residents said they even used to leave their doors unlocked. That was about 15 years ago, right after the Castle Airforce Base closed. Now, the neighborhood is one of the city's most violent.

Residents said changes occurred after homeowners moved away when the base closed. The area began to attract a criminal element.

Off the 99 reporters Ameera Butt and Mike North investigate how this once quiet neighborhood devolved into being overrun by gang-violence and crime.

Through the past couple weeks, reporters talked to residents and police about what life is like on Meadows Avenue.
