Merced Sun-Star health care reporter Yesenia Amaro met with Off the 99 to discuss her series of stories on nutrition for high school kids in the area, and the obesity rate among young adults in the county.
Some 34 percent of residents in Merced County are obese, according to a study cited in Amaros stories. But some teenagers are coming up with solutions. One turned to a weight management programs that incorporates a better lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing a chronic illness as an adult. And that need for a healthier lifestyle is also extended to area high schools. Merced County school officials say they're trying their best to keep youngsters away from less nutritious foods and keep them from overeating.
