Merced County Sheriff's deputies say an argument over a chainsaw turned deadly Saturday night -- and now a father is in jail for allegedly killing his 46-year-old son.
Daniel McDonald, 66, was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of first degree murder for allegedly shooting his son, Donald McDonald, at the home they shared in the 11000 block of Griffith Avenue in Delhi.
Deputies responded to the scene at 8:10 p.m. and found the suspect still holding the alleged murder weapon. Alcohol was inside the house and may have been involved, according to Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin.
Pazin said Donald McDonald was a mechanic and had been trying to fix a chainsaw inside the house. After the son was unable to fix the chainsaw, Pazin said an argument erupted between father and son. At the end of the dispute, Daniel McDonald grabbed a rifle and fatally shot his son.
Detectives haven't released the number of times the victim was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect is being held without bail. McDonald's death is the sixth homicide reported this year in Merced County.
