Will he or won't he? Nobody seems to know whether Merced City Councilman John Carlisle will run for re-election -- maybe not even Carlisle himself, according to Councilman Bill Blake.

Blake said he quizzed Carlisle about his plans during a recent public gathering at the Merced Courthouse.

"At that time he hadn't made up his mind," Blake said, adding that he couldn't draw a bead on Carlisle's intentions. "With John, you truly never know. You can't anticipate him."

Likewise, fellow council members Noah Lor and Mary-Michal Rawling said they hadn't heard anything about whether Carlisle was planning to run. "I was wondering what was going on with that myself," Lor said.

The deadline to file for Merced City Council is this Friday, but if Carlisle fails to take out papers by then, it'll get extended for one week.

Carlisle, a retired probation officer, was the top vote-getter when he ran in 2007, earning 22.5 percent of ballots. A Nov. 7, 2007 Merced Sun-Star article said he promised to bring a fresh perspective to Merced's council dais, one that wasn't connected to real estate interests. "I don't know how to spell na-na-na-na-na," he was quoted as saying at an election-night party celebrating the win. "I think this means people can see through the smokescreen that was thrown up by some of the competition and that (the voters are) not as dumb as the real estate folks think they are."
