Prep Football: Buhach Colony tops Enochs

ATWATER -- Who says Buhach Colony can't break the big play anymore?

After a lethargic opening half against Enochs on Friday night, junior running back Leon Miles gave the Thunder the shot of energy it was so desperately craved.

With Buhach holding just a 7-3 lead at intermission, Miles broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run a little less than five minutes into the third quarter.

The Thunder offensive line began imposing its will from there.

After being held by Enochs to a respectable 96 rushing yards in the first half, the BC beef pounded out 232 yards on the ground in the second half. The Thunder had six runners with at least 30 yards, steamrolling their way to a 27-3 victory at Falcon Field.

"The second half you could tell their linebackers weren't coming up as hard," Buhach Colony head coach Kevin Swartwood said. "Maybe they were getting a little tired.

"After a couple drives it seemed like we were able to pretty much do whatever we wanted."

Miles led all rushers with 77 yards. Stefon Gold added 53 rushing yards, Jayce Webster 50 and Josh Ramos went for 47 as the team finished with 328 yards on 43 carries.

Gold (2-yard run) and Ramos (43-yard run) added second-half touchdowns to help put the game away.

While the BC offense did finally shift into top gear, the Thunder defense was clicking on all cylinders from the opening kickoff.

The Eagles could have made it a very different contest, three times driving into goal-line situations.

Each and every time the BC defense sent them backwards. With big sacks by Aziz Shittu and Enrique Covarrubias, the Eagles (1-1) lost a total of 19 yards in the three goal-line efforts.

"Aziz was just doing his thing out there tonight," Covarrubias said. "He made sure that everything he didn't get, we were there to clean up.

"Our 'D' stepped it up tonight."

Enochs' only points came on a Sam Herring 25-yard field goal in the first quarter.

BC answered as Covarrubias hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Nick Datray with 45 seconds left in the half.
