LOS BANOS -- James Sams ran rushed for 172 yard and four touchdowns in a 55-10 Los Banos rout of visiting Tracy on Friday night.
The junior had three of his four scores before halftime, and nailed the coffin shut with a 62-yard run on the first play from scrimmage after the break, setting up his fourth touchdown. Both Sams and Los Banos quarterback Chris Corpuz sat out the final 16 minutes.
"It's nice to be able to do what we did and get everyone playing time and stay healthy," Los Banos coach Dennis Stubbs said.
The Los Banos defense had Tracy's number from the second quarter on, despite missing outside linebacker Trent Taylor and inside linebacker Greg Williams, who played sparingly to rest a sprained ankle sustained the week before. Adrian Rivas assumed Williams' leadership duties, calling the defensive checks.
"That team over there is about at physical as I've seen a team in Week 1," Tracy coach Matt Shrout said.
Sams scored on runs of 6, 6, 28 and 28 yards. Daeton West added a 94-yard kickoff return that broke an early 7-7 tie, and Corpuz tossed a 22-yard pass to receiver Tommy Wright III on a fade route in the second quarter. It was Wright's first varsity touchdown, but the senior re-injured a shoulder just healed from a broken collarbone suffered this summer.
Backup running back Garrett Mentz got into the act late in the game, running for touchdowns of 7 and 20 yards.
