LOS BANOS -- For half of Friday's game, Dos Palos looked like the football team that has given the larger Los Banos High fits since the Westside War started in 1925.
But this year it was Los Banos that added one to the win total, a physical 28-9 victory.
Running back/linebacker Garrett Mentz was the star this week for Los Banos. The senior scored the only points of the first half when he blocked a Marc Navarro punt at about the 10-yard line, then dove on the ball as it rolled into the end zone.
"It felt great, I felt like it gave our team the momentum," Mentz said. "It helped us wake up."
Mentz put another six on the board in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run, and led Los Banos with 83 yards on 14 carries. Dos Palos' Kailan Hill, a former Los Banos backup, rushed for 144 yards on 20 carries.
"He's one of the better players. You have to put the ball in the better players' hands," DP coach Frank Lemos said. "We have four or five guys, we can spread the ball around. He the one strong running back."
Los Banos put the game away in the fourth quarter when quarterback Chris Corpuz hit Tommy Wright III on a 5-yard out route in the end zone. Corpuz later found Mentz on a 15-yard dump pass for a touchdown.
DP scored in the last seconds of the game with a 12-yard Christian Escalante pass to Jerry Warren.
Buhach Colony 42, Lodi 7
LODI -- The Thunder marched 80 yards on their first possession for a touchdown and set the tone early in their win over the Flames (0-3).
Kevin Kelleher capped off the opening drive and later added a long touchdown run in the second half.
Buhach Colony (4-0) jumped out to a 21-7 lead by halftime.
"First drive was as good as I've seen," Thunder coach Kevin Swartwood said "It was our base offense, getting chunks of yards for first down, first down, first down. We kind of grounded it out. We set the tone on both sides of the ball pretty early."
Nick Datray connected with Joe Marques for a 65-yard scoring strike on the Thunder's second possession to extend the lead to 13-0.
Livingston 21, Mariposa 16
MARIPOSA -- Adrian Muniz, Jamie Orozco and Brian Perez all scored second-half touchdowns as Livingston was able to hold off a late charge by Mariposa on the road.
