Merced firefighters raised $4K for breast cancer research with pink T-shirt sales

If you saw hot-pink T-shirts being worn by Merced city firefighters around the city this past month, they were showing support for people fighting breast cancer.

After selling almost 1,300 of the T-shirts, the group raised $4,000 for the group, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, according to firefighter Sean Tierney. The money will go to breast cancer research.

“The community was very supportive. UC Merced was involved with us in events,” he said. He said firefighters wore the T-shirts on duty. Firefighter Jeff Hakola organized the T-shirt sales.

It was the first year the group sold the shirts and organized such an initiative, according to Tierney.
