A suspicious device found in a wing of UC Merced's Kolligian Library was removed by the Merced Police Department's Bomb Squad on Tuesday.
The package, which was in a plastic bag, was not detonated, according to Cmdr. Dave Alcaraz with the bomb squad.
"We actually X-rayed it first and determined there was no explosives in it. We carried it out," Alcaraz said.
The incident is under investigation, according to Rita Spaur, chief of police for the UC Merced Police Department.
The east wing of the library was evacuated Tuesday morning after a person reported finding a suspicious object inside the building around 8 a.m., according to James Leonard, campus spokesman.
"We have opened the first floor of the library. However, the other floors of the library remain closed at this time," Spaur said Tuesday afternoon.
UC Merced is asking people who have seen anything suspicious to contact UC Merced police dispatch at (209) 228-2677 or police@ucmerced.edu, or leave anonymous information at (209) 228-8477.
