Prep Notebook: GV back in hunt for a football coach

- sjansen@mercedsunstar.com

Here we go again.

For the third time in six years, Golden Valley is searching for a new football coach.

The Cougars were 7-13 in the two years under Jake Messina, who resigned last week. Before that, GV went 9-21 with Jon Betschart.

It'll be interesting to see which direction the administration goes with in its next hire.

Nelson Gifford may get his shot. Gifford was brought to Golden Valley by Messina to install his spread offense.

The Cougars offense put up some impressive numbers, including 48 points against Buhach Colony.

However, one name you might hear pop up is Dennis Stubbs.

There are rumors that Stubbs, a former Golden Valley coach who left for the Los Banos football coaching job in 2006, would like to get back in the Merced High School Unified District.

If Stubbs is interested in coming back, isn't that a call Golden Valley has to make?

It could be a tough two weeks for Le Grand now that it has won the section title.

The Bulldogs can do nothing but wait to find out if they'll get a chance to play for a state championship.

The one team that can keep Le Grand from making the trip to Carson on Dec. 16 is Ferndale.

The Wildcats (10-1) will play Fortuna in the North Coast Division 4 semifinals on Saturday.

If Ferndale can get past that, it likely will face an unbeaten Salesian team in the finals.

If Ferndale loses either game, Le Grand would be a lock for the state bowl. If the section commissioners had to choose between the two, the Wildcats do have one loss, but played a tougher schedule than Le Grand.

Merced has filled out its football schedule for next year.

The Bears will host both Enochs and Downey. Merced will also face Clovis West, Fresno Edison and Clovis North.

The Golden Valley girls basketball will host its annual Lady Cougar Classic this week.

The three-day tournament begins on Thursday.

Buhach Colony will open the tournament at 3:30 p.m. against Enochs. Le Grand will follow at 5 p.m. against Dublin.

Livingston will play Hoover at 6:30 p.m. and Golden Valley hosts Pacheco at 8 p.m.
