On M Street, just past Barclay Way headed north, there's a pile of wood, three mattresses, cups, two chairs, black plastic garbage bags, rocks and landscaping material sitting in a pile. A little farther down are PVC pipes, more landscaping material, a football, orange netting and an oil container.
Jeff Denno, who said he hadn't noticed the piles until recently, has seen at least five or six piles that look like construction trash in that area.
Past Mandeville Lane and M Circle, and then on Bellevue Road and M Street, there were more piles on the ground.
Stan Murdock, director of Public Works Operations for the city of Merced, said he thought there may be some illegal dumping going on in the area because the piles have been sitting there for a while, but in "my understanding, the property owner actually went through and cleaned up debris that was on the property and put it in the piles so (the property owners) can plant the land," Murdock said.
He turned the matter over to Code Enforcement because it's private property.
Mike Stephenson, who manages the Code Enforcement Department for the city, said the city wasn't sure who the property owners were. But the field had been cleaned up and the debris had been moved to the side.
"The owner hasn't picked up the piles, so there is additional garbage dumped on the piles," Stephenson said. "Because there is a pile there, people are saying 'Oh look I can dump my garbage there.' "
Code Enforcement will be notifying the property owners and opening a case on the matter.
What's the problem: Piles of trash along M Street and M Circle
Who's responsible: The city wasn't sure who the private property owners were.
What's being done: Since it's private property, the matter's been turned over to the Code Enforcement Department. The department will work with the private property owner to get the mess cleaned up.
