DELHI -- A man killed himself Monday afternoon by walking in a train's path near Collier Road and Highway 99 between Hilmar and Delhi, according to the Merced County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's spokesman Tom MacKenzie said a man was sitting on a nearby levee as the train approached. The train conductor told sheriff's officials the man looked up at the oncoming train and wandered onto the tracks, despite several blasts of the train's horn.
Witnesses said a small encampment was set up near the crash site.
