Loose Lips: Typeface trouble for the Merced Theatre?

01/19/12 17:25

The tower on the new theater building is causing consternation for some of the area's graphic design snobs. Specifically, they don't like the bright blue font used on the theater marquee.

One former Sun-Star copy editor did some research and believes the theater board used either the Ludica Handwriting or Lucida Calligraphy typefaces. He said that while the font may have some use on a flyer announcing a retirement or baby shower, it should never be used larger than 12 or 15 points — and it certainly has no place on a theater marquee.

"It really feels like they put plastic hubcaps on a Rolls Royce," he said.

Ouch.

Still, it could be worse. It could have been Comic Sans. And with that in mind, we thought it might be fun to re-imagine Merced's other landmarks with out-of-the-box typefaces. How about Papyrus on the water tower? Arial on the Tioga building? What about Brush Script on the directional signs or Wing Dings in the city's logo?

Gives us chills. Fortunately, we're sure this will only happen when Helvetica freezes over.
