Bowling: La Donna Stone named president of Women's 500

During its annual meeting, the Merced/Atwater Women's 500 Club elected LaDonna Stone as President, Julie Wescott as Sergeant of Arms, and Rikki Cascia and Julie Egleston as directors for the 2012-14 seasons.

According to Kristin Weimer, club secretary, there was a brief discussion concerning a 500/600 club and nothing more. The members were not that interested. Weimer suggested that the club could honor those who have reached the 600 or 700 series with recognition of some sort.

The club had 22 members in attendance with JoAnn Baker from Dos Palos and Barbara Souza of Los Banos joining the club. At the conclusion of the meeting, the board voted to donate $100 to the Merced County Hall of Fame scholarship fund. The next board meeting will be held on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Bellevue Bowl.

The ladies took charge in the association's Senior Singles Championships Saturday at Castle Lanes. In the A division (50-64), Dana Lee rolled scratch games of 202, 205, 207 for handicapped 766, good for $67. In second was Roberta Valenti with a 703 ($45).

In B (65-up), Tom McBride won $73 after scratch games of 190, 228, 177 for a handicapped 805. In second was Janie Schropp, edging out Roger Ross by one stick, 677-676, for $57. Ross pocketed $43. There were a total of 28 seniors.

I guess you are never too old to think about or even roll a perfect game. Up in the Modesto area, Harry Holton did what we all think about when we are on the lanes -- he rolled a 300 game in the Dairyman's league. Holton is 80 years old and it was his first in an abbreviated bowling career. He has bowled for years, but took time off before returning to the sport five years ago. What does this tell you? There is hope for all of us.

Tuesday is the deadline for submitting nominations for the Merced County Bowling Hall of Fame and applications for the student scholarships.

Forms and rules are available at Bellevue Bowl and Castle Lanes.

A new nominee must have been a member of the association for over 20 years. The Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Saturday, April 14, at Atwater's Community Center.

I guess converting impossible splits has been the norm lately, as Dennis Williams, rolling for Ward Enterprises, picked up the 4-5-7-10 split in the Classic league. ... Marge Casaletto, who rolls in the Twilighters senior league at Castle Lanes, gave me a call with the following scores: Rodney Hoofard 211, Jim Boyenga 245, Dee Bayer 206 and Sachiko Howard 233. ... Another league 700 was rolled by Marcus Kendrick in the Monday Merchants as he shot games of 217-275-225 for a 717, his first.

Modesto's USBC Association was listed as one of the top 25 associations in the USBC to make a donation to the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL). Modesto donated $3,514. There were nine California associations on the list. Once again, Minneapolis led the nation with its bowlers sending a check to the BVL in the amount of $20,000.

Our association is waiting for one league at Castle Lanes to turn in their donation before association chair Karen Tweed submits it to the California BVL.
