Merced College 9, Cosumnes River 0

Ricky Diaz broke the deadlock of a scoreless game with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday afternoon.

It sparked a six-run rally as Merced College cruised to a shutout victory over Cosumnes River.

Derick Velazquez pitched scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate win.

Josue Aguilar, Devin Lee and Joseph Maldonado combined for three scoreless innings of one-hit relief for the Blue Devils (2-0).

BASKETBALL

MEN

UC Merced 74,

Holy Names 71

Aki Chambers poured in a game-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven steals as UC Merced finally pulled out a close game.

Javon Barrino had 13 points off the bench and Michael Yonemoto turned in a career-high 12 in the Golden Bobcat (3-5 Cal Pac, 4-13) victory.

West Hills 69, Merced 68 (OT)

Five Blue Devils scored in double digits led by Andre Mattson's 16 points, but West Hills denied MC its first conference win with an overtime victory.

Josh Tatum had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Trek Fayerweather chipped in 13 behind three 3-pointers for the Blue Devils (0-8 CVC, 1-18).

WOMEN

Merced 70, Porterville 50

Miranda Flores (team-high 18 points) and Kelsey Lemasney (14) combined for 10 of Merced College's 11 3-pointers and Kortani Brown (team high 18 points and 11 rebounds) finished three assists shy of a triple-double as the Lady Devils (4-3 CVC, 10-13) bounced back from a bad loss to Sequoias with a rout at Don Reid Court.

The 18 points was a career high for Flores, whose six 3s fell one shy of the MC record Lemasney set earlier in the season.
