Merced High student Linda Chang wins statewide Lions Club award

The Merced Breakfast Lions Club said Linda Chang of Merced High School was honored last weekend at the Lions’ MD4 Annual Convention in Ontario, Calif., as the Leo of the Year.

She competed against many other nominees from across the state. The Lion’s MD4 District oversees the 15 sub-districts in California with more than 790 clubs and some 23,429 active members. The Merced High School Leo Club, with 105 members, is sponsored by the Merced Breakfast Lions Club and participates in many community service projects.

Linda comes from a family of seven sisters and two brothers. She served a leadership role in the Merced High School Leos Club for the past two years as club secretary in 2010-2011 and as the current president.

Linda has maintained a 3.85 GPA, has been an active member of the California Scholastic Federation, the Merced High Leadership Committee, the Avid Program for Academic Achievement, the Sonseekers Fellowship Club and has maintained a perfect attendance record for all three years.

“Without compromising the high standards she sets for herself, she is recognized by her peers as a caring, reliable, and intelligent individual, always willing to participate in the process of succeeding as a group,” said Gary M. Eno, adviser to the Mereced High Leos Club.

Lions MD4 Lions District sponsors the Youth Exchange Foundation which sends students 16 to 21 for summer programs to countries around the world. This year the Merced Breakfast Lions Club has three Merced High School Leo candidates applying to go to Japan for five weeks where they will attend a camp with students from around the world before visiting other Lions club host families. (Tokyo has more than 100 Lions clubs) MD4 also sponsors the Student Speaker Foundation, which distributes $100,000 in scholarships to students participating in the speech contest.

This year’s competion will begin at the club level on Feb. 9 at the Merced Breakfast Lion Clubs meeting at 6:30 a.m. Two Merced High Leos, Mai Xiong and E. Xiong, will be competing.
