Former day care operator Sheila Caceres pleaded not guilty Friday in a case involving a 2-month-old boy who died while in her care in February 2011.
Caceres faces a felony child endangerment charge and a misdemeanor violation of fire safety regulations for allowing day care children to be on her home's second floor.
She is due back May 23 in Sacramento Superior Court for a preliminary hearing stemming from the death of Avin Rominger inside her Mather home.

Caceres, once the county's "family child care provider of the year," previously agreed to a lifetime ban by the state from owning, working in or being present in a day care home.
Avin's parents, Dave and Rachelle Rominger, contend that Caceres found the baby unresponsive while he was left unattended in the upstairs of her home but went back downstairs and did not immediately summon help.
Coroner's officials have indicated in a sheriff's report on the case that "medical intervention could have saved the baby's life."
