Atwater woman killed in Highway 99 crash

May 7, 2012

A 33-year-old Atwater woman was killed when the vehicle she was driving ran off Highway 99 and rolled at 1:25 a.m. Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim’s identity was being withheld pending notification of her family.

The woman was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound on 99, north of Franklin Road, when the vehicle drifted to the right for unknown reasons and onto the dirt shoulder of the roadway, according to the CHP.

The Trailblazer traveled sideways along the shoulder in an northeasterly direction and then flipped, the CHP said. The vehicle came to rest on the driver's side.

Officers said the Trailblazer was heavily damaged in the crash, and the driver’s side door was torn off. Although the woman was wearing her seat beat, they said, she was ejected from the SUV as it rolled, sustaining fatal injuries.

The CHP said it isn’t known if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
