Head-on collision kills woman on Highway 140

July 16, 2012

— A motor home carrying four people collided with a pickup on Highway 140 just east of Merced on Monday afternoon, killing the driver of the motor home.

California Highway Patrol officer Richard Pereira said the black Dodge Dakota was westbound on the highway when it drifted to the right and off the road.

The driver of the pickup, 51-year-old Ninfa Contreras-Garcia of Planada, attempted to get back onto the road but overcorrected and slammed into the motor home head-on, Pereira said.

The driver of the motor home was pronounced dead at the scene. The CHP couldn't release the name of the person who was killed, a 51-year-old woman from Soquel, until her family was notified.

Heather McAllister, 28, of Fremont also was in the motor home and suffered major injuries. She was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.

Xavier Hilton, 16, of Santa Cruz was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.

The third passenger, 16-year-old April Harlamoff of Soquel, was taken to Memorial with minor injuries. All three of the injured motor home passengers were taken to the hospitals by helicopter.

Contreras-Garcia suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center.

The collision was reported on Highway 140 at Orchard Drive just before 1 p.m. Monday.

Debris from the collision scattered across a wide area of the road. The road was closed to traffic for hours as rescue personnel worked and a helicopter landed to take victims away.

The CHP said the truck and the motor home were traveling about 55 mph when the collision happened.

CHP investigators don't believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
