Mario Cobian, a Merced native and 1997 graduate of Golden Valley High School, has been promoted to sergeant while on his second deployment with the U.S. Army in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cobian is assigned to the 25th Transportation Company, 117th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 45th Sustainment Brigade, operating out of Kandahar, Afghanistan.
