Get taste of Merced symphony's talents

- Sun-Star Correspondent

The Merced Symphony Association opens the new season with its annual fundraiser, Music & Merriment, on Oct. 13.

"It's a very social fundraiser featuring wine and hors d'oeurvres with a Spanish flavor in the beautiful home of Richard and Mary Miller," Board President Judy Edwina Smith said. "Music & Merriment is a wonderful event where you can relax with friends and show your support for our symphony, while getting a glimpse of the upcoming Nov. 3 Concert."

Music for the evening will be provided by world-renowned guitarist Jaume Torrent from Barcelona, Spain. He will be accompanied by his good friend Joseph Gold, violinist from the Bay Area who studied under the legendary Jascha Heifetz.

Music Director Henrik Jul Hansen will also mix and mingle with guests and talk about the upcoming season.

"Can't wait to hear these acclaimed artists," board member Ann Andersen said.

Both musicians will be performing with the Merced Symphony at the 2012-2013 opening concert on Nov. 3 at the newly restored Merced Theatre.

"This is a rare opportunity to get to know these extraordinary musicians up close and talk with our music director, Henrik Jul Hansen," Edwina Smith said.

"It will be a fun, unique evening to socialize with those who appreciate classical music, hear exceptional music from world-renowned artists, and chat with the artists and MSA conductor," Andersen said. "We see him on stage but rare is the opportunity to chat."

Tickets for the event are $50 and are only available in advance. They include the concert, wine and hors d'oeurvres.

Proceeds from the Music & Merriment will go toward the cost of the Nov. 3 concert, which will feature the American Premier of the Concierto de Rialp by Jaume Torrent, the second movement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, Paganini in America (for guitar, violin and strings) also by Torrent, Overture to Die Fledermaus by Strauss, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

"This is a perfect program that will delight our audience!" Edwina Smith said. "It's a great follow-up to the program the Merced Symphony played with pianist Tara Kamangar for the grand opening of the Merced Theatre last April, which showcased how wonderful it is to listen to a live performance by proficient, professional musicians. It's magical."
