Natural resources are summit's focus

SONORA -- Advocates for logging and other Sierra Nevada enterprises will hold their 12th annual Natural Resource Summit on Friday.

The free event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sierra Building at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, off Highway 49-108 at the west end of Sonora.

The summit will be held by the Tuolumne County Alliance for Resources and Environment and state Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, whose district includes the central Sierra.

The keynote speaker will be Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Elk Grove, who will discuss his work on the House Natural Resources Committee and with the U.S. Forest Service regional office.

Pete Kampa, general manager of the Tuolumne Utilities District, will speak on "county of origin" water issues. Chris Horgan of Stewards of the Sequoia will talk about the importance of recreation to rural economies.

Eric Eisenhammer of the Coalition of Energy Users will discuss a state law aimed at curbing climate change. Olsen will provide an update on state legislation affecting the region.

Co-sponsors of the summit include the Stanislaus National Forest and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. Several agencies, groups and businesses will provide information at tables before and after the talks.
