Cross-dressing robber holds up bank

CERES -- CERES -- A man dressed as a woman who robbed a Ceres bank last week has been identified by police as 26-year-old Leonard Charles Brown Jr.

A suspect on Sept. 18 went into the Bank of America on Mitchell Road wearing a black wig, an off the shoulder women’s shirt, black mini skirt and stretchy pants. He also carried a purple purse.

He demanded money and was last seen running eastbound across Mitchell with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous witness, the Ceres SWAT team searched an apartment complex for the robber and another man the witness said he saw. No one was in the apartment and the man who lived there had nothing to do with the robbery, said Sgt. Jose Berber.

Berber said detectives have not substantiated whether Brown was with another man during his getaway or if the anonymous witness was involved.

Detectives believe Brown may be in the Merced area.

Anyone with information about Brown’s whereabouts or with any information about this case is encouraged to call the Ceres Police Department at (209) 538-5712 or the Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers.
