Matt Thiel: Where was Fister?

Where was Fister?

I was disappointed when I received my Merced Sun-Star on the morning of Sept. 28 and did not see "Merced's own Doug Fister makes sports history," or something along that line as the main headline on the front page. Not even the main headline for the sports section.

I don't think people realize what a huge accomplishment nine strikeouts in a row is. He is now in a class with legendary pitchers such as Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Rodger Clemens. He now holds the American League record; this record, by the way, is over 100 years old.

Fister, a Major League pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, in my opinion does not receive enough coverage by the Sun-Star for being a local Merced resident who has worked hard and has been successful.

Come on, what does a guy have to do to be headline news, even just in sports? This is not to take anything away from those who were on the front pages on Sept. 28, but again, in my opinion, give coverage where coverage is well-deserved, especially for someone who grew up in Merced and helps Merced organizations a lot.
