MERCED — A 41-year-old man is dead after being shot late Sunday in the 1200 block of West Sixth Street in South Merced, police reported. Details are preliminary and no suspects are in custody.
Police responded at 10:46 p.m. after receiving calls from residents about shots fired in the area.
Officers found the victim lying unresponsive on the south side of the sidewalk near Margaret Sheehy Elementary School. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim dead, according to Sgt. Scott Skinner.
The victim was believed to be unarmed and found alone. No onlookers were in the area when police arrived, Skinner said.
Police aren't releasing the victim's name, but Skinner said the man was known to law enforcement from previous contacts with officers. Skinner said it is too early to tell if the incident was gang-related.
The homicide is the seventh reported this year in Merced and the 14th in Merced County.
