CARLIN: Police doing the best they can

In the story "Delay in clearing pot grow criticized" (Oct. 5, Page A-1), a citizen identified as "Jamie" voiced her frustration over why it took so long and why the process was so difficult for law enforcement to bust a suspected illegal marijuana grow at an address just a 1,000 feet from a school.

Officials explained that the Merced Police Department staff was significantly reduced -- from 111 to 84 -- hundreds of tips must be reviewed and the various rules, regulations and the law must be followed. These were not offered as excuses but rather an honest attempt to remain transparent.

We need more concerned citizens like Jamie to step forward and take a proactive interest in our community. Without the support and understanding of our citizens law enforcement would become ineffective.

Peace officers are citizens just like Jamie. There is one difference: In Merced, with a population of 80,232, there are 84 citizens that strap on a ballistic vest and gun before they go to work. They are out there while you and your family safely sleeps. They try not to think of the dangers they face and focus on protecting this community.

D. A. CARLIN
