Gas prices retreating from sudden spike

Gas prices continue to edge down in the San Joaquin Valley.

After spiking more than 50 cents a couple weeks ago, gasoline prices have shown a steady drop since Gov. Jerry Brown ordered regulators to allow the sale of winter-blend fuel earlier than usual this year.

The national per-gallon price for regular unleaded, according to AAA, was $3.78 on Monday, down a penny from Sunday. California continues to lead the nation, with an average price of $4.60.

In the Modesto area, prices reflect the drop, with Love's truck stop and two Arco stations in Ripon selling gas for $4.19 per gallon, according to www.ModestoGasPrices.com. The Modesto Truck Plaza on Seventh Street is offering gas for $4.25 a gallon, with several other stations selling it for $4.29.
