Discounts mark Adopt A Shelter Dog Month October is the Humane Society's Adopt A Shelter Dog Month and the Merced SPCA will honor that with a 50 percent discount off the usual adoption fee for dogs. They are also giving a 25 percent discount on all animals over the age of 5. Call (209) 384-7722.

Mission fund-raiser The Rescue Mission will host a drive-thru barbecue chicken dinner fund-raiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Mission, 1921 Canal St. Tickets are $10 per person and include a complete chicken dinner and dessert for one. Call (209) 722-9269 or (209) 723-2900.

Oktoberfest event JMJ Maternity Homes will host an Oktoberfest at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Hall. Tickets are $20 per person and there will be a live dessert auction. Proceeds will go to support Mary's Mantle Maternity Home, which provides pregnant women in crisis with a safe, nurturing, educational Christian environment to complete their pregnancy and prepare for the birth of their child. Veterans Day Parade The Merced County Veterans Council, Merced County Human Services Agency and the Merced County Chamber of Commerce will present the 2012 Veterans Day Parade starting at noon on Oct. 31 with an opening ceremony at Bob Hart Square. This is a free event and those wishing to participate in the parade should call (209) 385-7588 no later than Oct. 31. Parade entry fee is $20.

VFW rummage sale DELHI — The Livingston-Delhi Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars 8327 will hold a huge rummmage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 2, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 3, at 9799 Stephens St. Everything on Saturday will be $1 per bag or half price if it is too big to fit in a bag. Native plant sale MARIPOSA — Mariposa County Resource Conversation District will hold its 42nd annual California native plant sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 3, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the Coulterville Park. Call (209) 966-3431.
