High-speed chase ends with crash, one arrest

A Merced man was arrested Thursday morning following a high-speed car pursuit that ended in a crash in Mariposa County, according to Merced police Lt. Bimley West.

West said a police officer tried stopping a Nissan Xterra for driving recklessly and running a stop sign at Marthella and Yosemite Parkway. The man, identified as 33-year-old Erik Dathan Facio, did not pull over and instead sped up, evading the officer at 100 miles per hour eastbound on Highway 140.

The pursuit continued into Mariposa County and was turned over the the Mariposa Sheriff’s office and CHP, West reported. The pursuit finally ended after the man crashed his car near Highway 49 after side-swiping a Sheriff deputy’s patrol car.

The suspect took off on foot and was chased into a canyon, where officers used a Taser to subdue him. After receiving medical treatment at a Mariposa hospital, Facio was arrested and booked into Mariposa County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

West said no officers where injured during the pursuit.
