Pedestrian robbed at Childs Avenue and N Street, police say

MERCED -- A 20-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint by two men this weekend while he was walking near N Street and Childs Avenue, Merced police reported Monday.

The robbery was reported just before 4 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Bimley West.

When officers arrived at the scene, the victim told them he'd been walking home when the two robbers approached him and demanded to know if he was a gang member.

When the victim told them he wasn't involved in gangs, the robbers pointed guns at him and demanded money and the contents of his pockets, West said.

The victim surrendered cash and his identification. The robbers fled southbound on N Street. Officers checked the area for the robbers but couldn't find them.

One of the robbers was described as a Latino male about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build and wearing dark clothing. The other robber was described as a Latino male, 5 feet 3 inches in height, with a "stocky" build and wearing dark clothing.

Police ask anyone with information to call Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702 or the department's automated tip line at (209) 385-4725.
