Police in Ceres shoot man after short chase

CERES -- A man was shot Friday morning by police in Ceres after an early morning pursuit.

An officer opened fire on Martin Moreno, 28, after he led police on a chase. Moreno suffered injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

According to police, the episode began at 2:11 a.m. when someone at the Del Taco restaurant at Mitchell Road and Whitmore Avenue reported a fight.

As officers arrived, one of the two subjects drove away from the area. Police gave chase for about a mile before Moreno turned onto Belleza Court, where an officer performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique stop, in which an officer hits the back side of a car to make it stop.

Within seconds, police said, an officer fired at the driver.
