The Oct. 23 article featuring Matthew Garcia, author of "From the Jaws of Victory: The Triumph and Tragedy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement," was interesting. However, Mr. Garcia did not specifically refer to the role that Filipino farmworkers played.
Filipino scholars and historians have documented how one of the most unsung Filipino Labor organizers, Larry Itliong, and a group of Filipino farmworkers instigated one of the American farm labor movement's finest moments, The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brought about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW).
October was Filipino American History Month as declared by the state Legislature and U.S. Congress and the opportunity to comment on Garcia's book helps to set the record straight.
