Film, discussion looks at sustainable farming

MERCED -- People interested in sustainable farming are invited to view a new film on the topic at the University of California at Merced campus Friday evening.

The free screening of "Symphony of the Soil" will be followed by a panel discussion that includes director Deborah Koons Garcia, widow of Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia. Central Valley farmers and academics will take part.

The film, shot on four continents, explores the basics of soil and its relationships with water, the atmosphere, plants and animals. It examines how soil has been affected by farming, deforestation and development.

"Symphony of the Soil" will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Lakireddy Auditorium at UC Merced, 5200 N. Lake Road.
