Agents with the Merced Multi-Agency Gang Task Force agents arrested one man this month after a brief pursuit in Merced.

The driver of the car, however, was able to escape on foot. The incident was reported Nov. 9 after agents were conducting surveillance on a Maple Avenue residence, looking for Gilbert Ayala, 27, -- a gang member and parolee who failed to report to his parole agent, according to a task force press release.

Ayala was on parole for being in possession of two stolen vehicles and a gang enhancement. While he was in prison he was also charged with manufacturing a weapon, according to the release.

Agents reported observing two people leave the home and get into a blue Honda Accord. The person who got into the driver’s side of the vehicle was identified by agents as Ayala. Agents tried to pull over the car, but Ayala refused to stop, according to the release.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle came to a sudden stopped and the occupants fled on foot. A perimeter was set up with the assistance of the Merced County Sheriff’s Department. The passenger identified as Darien Davis, 18, was located and taken into custody after entering a residence nearby. Ayala was able to escape.

The vehicle Ayala was driving was reported stolen to Merced police on Monday. Davis was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of possessing stolen property and conspiracy to commit a crime.
