Atwater man killed in Winton crash

DUI suspected; driver arrested

WINTON -- One man was arrested for driving under the influence after a two-car crash killed a 27-year-old man over the weekend south of Winton, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

The Merced County coroner has identified the victim as Matthew Frisk of Atwater.

The crash was reported about 2 p.m. on Winton Way near Gertrude Avenue.

Edgar Tapia, 22, of Winton was driving northbound on Winton Way in a 1996 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed as he approached Gertrude Avenue, according to officer John Patterson.

Frisk was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra westbound on Gertrude Avenue and crossed Winton Way, Patterson said. It's unknown if Frisk halted for the stop sign posted on Gertrude Avenue at Winton Way, according to the CHP.

The Honda hit the left front door of the Sentra, which then slid across the southbound lane of Winton Way in a northeasterly direction, the right rear of the car striking a metal pole on the west shoulder, Patterson said.

The Honda came to a rest on Winton Way.

No passengers were in the cars.

Cal Fire crews had to extricate Frisk from the Sentra. He died at the scene.

Tapia was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with minor injuries. After his release, Patterson said Tapia was booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The CHP said the crash remains under investigation.
