ATWATER -- Atwater police arrested a 19-year-old man during a probation check earlier this week after finding a loaded gun in his possession, Lt. Sam Joseph reported Wednesday.
According to Joseph, Fabian Elizarraraz has known gang affiliations and is on probation.
Two Atwater police officers along with two members of the Merced County Probation Department searched Elizarraraz's residence in the 1300 block of High Street around 11 a.m. Monday.
Joseph said they had found firearms during a check of the home in October.
Upon entering the residence, officers found Elizarraraz asleep in his bedroom, according to Joseph.
After searching his room on Monday, officers found a loaded five-shot Smith & Wesson revolver.
Elizarraraz was arrested four weapons charges and booked at the Merced County Jail in lieu of $155,000 bail.
The officers did a great job of "finding and removing this firearm off the street and possibly prevented a tragedy," Joseph said.
