Henry J. Fisher: Veteran of 20 years defends president

I am very much offended by the two letters to the editor in the Monday, Nov. 19 edition, "Astonished at Vote."

I am a black veteran who served 20 years of my life in defense of our country. I was proud to put my life on the line many times in the submarine service. So it is only natural for me to come to the defense of our young black president who inherited a real mess.

I am sure he has made mistakes like the previous president. That's no reason to put everything bad on his shoulders. President Obama has more than enough to deal with.

I am only one of the millions who feel the same way about our president. We are all one nation whether we sink or swim.

The Civil War is a prime example of what happens when we act like spoiled children.

HENRY J. FISHER, U.S. Navy, retired Merced
