Friends of the Library Christmas book sale

The Friends of the Merced County Public Library will hold its Christmas book sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday on the main floor of the library. All proceeds go to purchase new items.

Native Daughters annual essay contest

The Native Daughters of the Golden West will host its annual essay contest, "Wonders of California." Entries must be 250 to 500 words, typed and double spaced. The topic can be any subject relating to California. The contest is for students in fourth through eight grades. Name, address, phone number and grade level should be placed on the reverse side of the essay. For more information, call (209) 261-0720.

Mental illness support

Merced County National Alliance on Mental Illness holds bi-weekly support groups for families affected by serious mental illness. If you'd like more information, call (209) 381-6844 and a volunteer will contact you within 48 hours.

Legal services

Central California Legal Services offers legal advice and representation to eligible individuals in tenant rights and homeless issues, Social Security and SSI disability claims, CalWorks, Medi-Cal, unemployment and CalFresh (food stamp) cases and much more. Cat adoption events

Last Hope Cat Kingdom is looking for volunteers for its Saturday and Sunday adoption events at PetSmart. The group brings cats and dogs in on those days for adoption specials, and they are in need of people to give just an hour or two on one day to help get homes for these special pets. Hamburgers at VFW

ATWATER -- Hamburger Night is every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Atwater Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 1390 Broadway. The Atwater VFW Hall is available for rent to the public for parties. It holds 150 people and has a full service kitchen. For more, call (209) 358-7224.
