Gov. Jerry Brown and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and one other University of California regent voted against giving new UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks a $50,000 raise over what his predecessor made. Another person who gets it is UC Riverside President Timothy P. White, the incoming chancellor of the California State University system, who requested -- and got -- a 10 percent pay cut from the salary his predecessor makes, which the CSU board was prepared to give him. That's the "spirit of servant leadership" the governor was talking about. Too bad that more public employees and politicians don't get that.
