A 24-year-old man was in custody Saturday on suspicion that he shot to death another man who was on the phone with 911 emergency personnel during the shooting, authorities said.
The altercation followed a road rage incident in north Sacramento County, according to sheriff's deputies.
Brian Jones, 24, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of murder after his arrest by Sacramento County sheriff's homicide detectives.
The Sacramento County sheriff's communication center received a 911 call from a man in the Foothill Farms area shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.
He told police that a woman had threatened him with a gun and that he was being forced to follow her car. During the 911 call, communications personnel heard gunshots and the line disconnected, according to reports.
Police were called out to the corner of Predial and Essence ways, where they found the man in his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities then detained two women and Jones, who were in the area in separate vehicles.
The women were driving a vehicle that matched the description the victim gave to communications personnel. In addition, a firearm was later found in the area where deputies had observed Jones driving.
According to investigators, the victim had been involved in a road rage incident with the two women and followed them in his vehicle.
The women told detectives they became worried when the victim followed them through a residential neighborhood.
Unsure of what to do, one of the women called a relative, later identified as Jones. Detectives believe Jones determined the women's whereabouts and intended to confront the man.
The victim's claim that the women brandished a gun at him appear to be unfounded, according to the investigation. The women were released.
