Referee struck by car after officiating game in Dos Palos

A referee was struck by a vehicle in Dos Palos after officiating a basketball game at Bryant Middle School Dec. 6.

John Steinborn, 77, of Clovis, was crossing Bryant Avenue from east to west after a game between Bryant and Wilson Middle School out of Chowchilla when he was struck by a 1995 Chevrolet pickup driven by Joseph Maldonado, 21, of Dos Palos, traveling southbound on Bryant, according to the California Highway Patrol Los Banos office.

CHP public information officer Matt Pinheiro said no drugs or alcohol were involved, and the vehicle didn't appear to be traveling over the speed limit. Maldonaldo was not cited for the accident.

Steinborn, who was struck by the front driver’s side of the vehicle, was taken to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos, then transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he is listed in in serious condition.
