I have been asked recently why I was not an assistant coach this year for the Merced College mens basketball team. I realized that I was ready to focus my time in other areas of my life. Seven seasons has been a short period. Having been provided the opportunity to engage and motivate student athletes has been a cerebral and physical experience. I enjoyed every second on the court, every minute in the weight room and every meal at Dennys. I had the privilege to study and learn the game of basketball from a man who teaches that the win-loss record is irrelevant when compared to the success in the game of life.
Thank you, Coach Bill Russell, for allowing me to be an assistant for the past seven seasons. I would also like to thank coaches Reggie Burch and Hector Nava for sharing the same desire to compete. Thank you to Wallace Smith for being good co-pilot when driving to and from games. Thank you to game statistician Fred Calico who sets the benchmark for dedication and accuracy. I enjoyed my seven years as a volunteer assistant coach for the Merced College men's basketball team.
