The McClatchy papers, including the Sun-Star, deserve credit for printing columns by Victor Davis Hanson and Dan Walters. I particularly appreciated the Nov. 23 column by Hanson, "Let Obama be Obama."
In the article, Hanson outlines a post-election strategy for congressional Republicans that addresses all the major policies. But the best of all is to let Obama raise taxes on the "rich" and any other segment of society he targets. All the Democrats ever want is more tax money to spend and waste.
But with their total control in Sacramento and virtual control in D.C., there are no restraints. Everything is on the table, all in the name of "fairness" and "redistribution." Keep your eyes on the concept of taxing all wealth -- not just income, but a tax on everything you already own. The Democrats have long wanted to eliminate Proposition 13 and have managed to nibble at the edges of this protection. And all that money sitting in pension and retirement funds is so tempting! Every facet of our lives is vulnerable to "fees" and "licenses" and "special service charges." Unfortunately, the GOP "leadership" will not follow Hanson's strategy. Hold onto your wallets and remember how you voted.
