Yahaira Carrrillo: Don't fence in Atwater High

Today our English teacher asked if Atwater high school was considered a safe place or a non-safe place. Atwater High School is the only school without gates around our campus and I believe this is what makes us unique. I consider my high school a safe place.

The question has been asked many times: Should we build fences around Atwater High School?

I say no because we don't know need it; nothing serious has happened at our high school. If somebody wanted to do something bad what makes you think a fence will stop them from achieving this?

Let me give you an examples: On "Black Friday," people stand in line for hours to purchase something they really desire and occasionally some get trampled when the doors open. If we were to have a situation like the Colorado massacre, it would be easier for students to escape without getting trampled without a fence.

Some people might argue that fences guarantee protection, but I disagree. In reality, is there anywhere we are truly safe?
