Volunteers for tax help

Adult literacy program
The Merced County Library is in need of volunteer tutors for its Read and Succeed -- Merced Adult Literacy Program. Please call (209) 385-7391 for more information.
Shelter is in need
The D Street Homeless Shelter is in need of food. The cold weather brings in more people, and an evening meal is served to a group that can number up to 65 on any given night. Prepared meals or people who can come to the shelter to help prepare meals are needed. There is freezer space available for meals that are prepared in advance. Call (209) 704-4384.
Travel baseball team
ATWATER -- Atwater Arsenal Travel Baseball is looking for players ages 13 and 14 for its 2013 season. Call (209)756-8222.
Menudo on Sundays
Club Mercedes serves menudo every Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon or until the menudo runs out. Cost is $8 for a large bowl and includes tortillas, coffee and Mexican pastry. Beverages are available for an extra cost. Dine in or take-out. Call (209) 383-9906.
Honors for area vets
LIVINGSTON -- The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary will be assisting in a special project to honor local veterans. They are collecting photos and service information on the veterans in Livingston, Delhi, Cressey, Ballico and surrounding areas. The information will used in a slide show to be shown at city events. Serving veterans
ATWATER -- The Veterans of Foreign Wars Atwater Post 9946, 1390 Broadway, has been serving the needs of veterans and their families for more than 62 years and welcomes any veteran whose service included combat or served in a combat operation. The group serves veterans and the city through programs including assisting people in receiving any benefits related to their service. Call (209) 358-7724.
Help out Atwater PAL
Save Mart offers a SHARES card. When people shop swipe the card after shopping there, 3 percent of the purchase goes to Atwater PAL to help maintain youth programs.
